I’d like to help you live as long, and well, as possible.

Hot take: getting older does not mean you are on an inevitable, slow downward slope.

There is a slope, but we’d like it to be sharp right? To live long and well and then be done when the time comes. Instead, often starting in our 30s we have injuries that become chronic pain, we develop a chronic illness or two over time, we may slowly become more disabled due to these injuries and illnesses, and older people are generally not included in our culture as much which all leads to us being more isolated and sick as we get older. We are told that this is just a part of getting old, so when we start experiencing changes in our 30s and 40s we say, “Here we go! I’m going to get old from here on out and everything’s going to get worse.”. While it’s true that inevitable changes happen and our bodies can experience wear, studies show that our lifestyle, mindset, and social connections have a greater effect on our longterm health than even our genetics do - and the healthier your habits, the easier it is to bounce back from injuries or illness. Living a healthy lifestyle can help us live long and die short (a term coined by Dr. Robert Landry).

The tough reality: the current environment we find ourselves in makes change difficult.

Cancer causing plastics and chemicals are everywhere. Cooking surfaces and utensils are toxic. Water and air pollution is inescapable. We are addicted to processed foods and whole foods can cost an entire paycheck. We work stressful long hours and cooking a meal at the end of the day sounds terrible. Meal prepping can be a draining task and who wants to eat the same thing every day when we have other delicious, quick and easy choices available? If you have kids, where’s the time to take care of yourself? We have been conditioned to want instant gratification and there is very little reward feeling when we make these small changes. Our society has slowly become more disconnected and many do not have a strong community and intergenerational spaces which effects our wellbeing longterm.

The good news: even with all that in the background, we still have some power over the speed and manner in which we age when we make small positive changes over time. And I believe it is absolutely worth the effort, time, money, and dedication it takes.

Whether you are simply wondering how to slow down biological aging (different than chronological; unfortunately we cannot stop time), or have chronic health problems that you’d like to manage better, I’d love to help you get a few steps closer to that goal.

About

My name is Allissa. I am 33 years old, I earned my degree in Kinesiology in 2013 and since 2012 I’ve earned certifications (500hrs of Yoga Teacher training, Certified Medical Exercise Specialist, and Certified Health and Wellness Coach) and have taken continuing education courses to support my career as a personal trainer and fitness instructor for special populations (seniors, people with chronic pain, Parkinson’s, dementia/Alzheimer’s, MS, post-stroke symptoms, neuropathy, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease osteoporosis etc.)

I’ve spent 12+ years working in physical therapy spaces, yoga studios, in-home personal sessions, and in long term care settings. I have seen the power of lifestyle changes even in the last stage of life, and if those folks can make changes and see positive effects in their day-to-day, anyone can. I am relentlessly positive while also not being in denial; I truly believe progress, or at least management and maintenance, is usually possible at anytime in one’s life.

I experience chronic pain and have experienced it for as long as I can remember. This is likely due to a connective tissue disorder that has effected the function of my muscles and joints, gastrointestinal tract and other areas of my physical and mental self. I know what it is like to feel “old” and I also know first hand how important my lifestyle choices have been for managing my illnesses - both physical and mental.

I am also a seasoned speaker on health and wellness topics, personal trainer, group fitness instructor and health coach and would be happy to visit your community or group.
